Meet the director
I was born in London and moved to NZ with my family when I was 5 years old, growing up in Karaka, South Auckland. I spent my college years at Wesley College where I was to meet my future wife, Vicki – my teacher’s daughter!
I left school in 1993 and began my Apprenticeship in Carpentry. Most of my apprenticeship was under the watchful eye of Richard Parr who passed onto me his eye for detail, patience and ultimately to get things right first time. I pride myself on applying these to my own work and also in the training of my team today. Our work was varied and interesting – from architectural homes to an oyster processing plant to a quarry wharf which involved diving and building at the same time. I also assisted Rich in building his 26ft cedar sailing boat. I had so many great experiences as an apprentice, which gave me a solid base to branch out into the many aspects of building.
In 2002 Vicki and I left NZ on an epic adventure beginning in Thailand and then onto London, where we spent 4 ½ years working and travelling the world. These were some of some of the best years of my life – live aboard diving in the Red Sea, an overland African safari, sighting Gorillas in Rwanda and humpback whales off the coast of Namibia. Travelling through Egypt, Laos, Cambodia, India, Myanmar and more we made awesome memories and special friends. Vic and I spent a lot of time together and knew after that we were a good team and could do anything.
Whilst in London I honed my skills on high spec apartments in Sloane Square and Notting Hill where I gained a reputation for being skilled in the art of finishing. Working amongst a team of antipodean builders I often ended up with the tasks which required patience, craftsmanship and an eye for detail. Later I went on to be foreman for Dunedin Construction where I led a team in an architectural renovation of a 3 story house in North London. It included a circular wine cellar dug underground and an impressive cantilevered, solid oak staircase. Working as a foreman I enjoyed the problem solving aspects and working with different people to create an awesome end result. My experiences as a builder in London cemented my enjoyment for building quality homes for clients.
Vic and I returned home to NZ in 2006, got married and bought our first home in Tuakau. In the 5 years I was away from New Zealand many changes had occurred in the building industry, particularly in relation to weather tightness as a result of the leaky homes debacle. I got myself an updated version of the 3604 – NZ Standards for timber framed buildings and upskilled my knowledge of the new industry standards whilst building homes for Frank Ver Heyen Builders in the Franklin area. I continue to keep upto date with the industry and ensure my team share my knowledge for building and craftsmanship.
Team Goodhand has grown from 2 to 5, with the addition of my awesome three children. In the winter you can find us heading to Whakapapa as much as possible and hitting the slopes for some quality family time. In summer we love to escape buildings and set up a tent for your typical Kiwi family camping holiday by the beach.
My passion lies in building well-designed, architectural homes with a focus on quality. Goodhand Building Contractors was formed in 2015 to deliver on that passion and build a team of awesome guys to develop our business further. I’ve worked on some very satisfying and challenging build projects around Auckland in recent years and love working together with clients to ensure projects run smoothly. I believe forming great relationships with my team, my clients and other tradesmen ensures effective communication – vital to the success of any building project. I endeavour to leave my clients with a home they love and enjoyment from the build experience.
